options for selling or growing

options for selling or growing

Options for selling or growing seem like two very different issues, but they share many characteristics and business considerations.  It might make more sense if I titled the article "Options for growing or selling after you've grown ..."
So the game plan is to grow your RMR and then sell, eventually.  There is no better alternative.  You do have several options along the way.
    For growth you can

  • develop your own marketing plan and sales force and grow account by account
  • purchase subscriber accounts from another alarm company

Many, particularly smaller operations, find that money is the inhibiting factor.  It takes money to fund acquisitions and to develop marketing strategies and create a sales force.  Here you also have options, and each option comes with its own peculiar plus and minuses.

  • self fund.  Depending on available funds you grow slowly and painfully, or you are lucky enough to have sufficient capital to fund a fast paced business
  • borrow money using personal assets.  Borrowing against personal assets, like a house, is scary, because there are no guarantees that your business will survive.  The good news is that alarm companies that set up and operate properly acquire a commodity that is readily salable, the alarm contracts.
  • team up with a dealer program that allows you to retain and build your own equity.  Not all dealer programs permit this so be careful what you sign up for.  Some dealer programs will use you are its sales agents.  You'll make a living but you won't grow any equity in alarm contract accounts.  That's OK as long as you understand that is deal.
  • work with lenders that help you grow equity, perhaps taking only some of the accounts but not all

I'm leaving this topic wide open for those companies to write in and let us know what you offer.
