Hosted by Ken Kirschenbaum ************************ More on Firetrol Warranty Issue from article on February 23, 2026 ************************ Ken, Fire protection equipment should never be altered in the field. Something as simple as drilling new holes for cable penetrations compromises the enclosure’s integrity. When a different routing path is needed, a properly positioned, listed through should be used to maintain the manufacturer’s design and the equipment’s listing. While on the subject of enclosure modifications, it’s important to remember that many jurisdictions—including New York City—prohibit even seemingly harmless changes, such as private-labeling a fire alarm control panel, pull station, or initiating device. A private label voids the UL mark and, in New York City, invalidates the FDNY Certificate of Approval. Although expensive, a cross-listing arrangement allows another company to legally “share” a manufacturer’s listing. It also requires specialized insurance, since the cross-listed entity is treated, for regulatory purposes, as a manufacturer. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and listings. If a deviation is unavoidable, consult both the manufacturer and the AHJ before proceeding. What seems to be a harmless modification—a hole in an enclosure or a silkscreened logo—may become an avoidable focal point after a catastrophic loss, raising unnecessary questions about the fitness and compliance of the equipment and the competence of the installation company. Best, Peter M. Goldring, SET, CFE 516-640-1410 peter@goldringprotection.com ************************ Response ************************ Simple enough. Make no modifications in the field and don't make them anywhere else without AHJ or manufacturer approval. Lawyer's don't need much to hang their hat on when looking for just one reason to sue you. Peter, by the way, is a Fire Commissioner in NJ and a consultant to the alarm industry. ************************ another comment ************************ Ken We had a new fire panel in an installation in Florida. The fire marshal saw another hole in the panel and decided to say something. We had to contact the manufacturer and they wrote a letter saying it was ok. It passed Mike ************************* Response ****************************** I guess sometimes it's easier to say "sorry" than ask in advance. You got lucky this time. Don't add holes, especially in fire alarm equipment. ****************************** STANDARD FORMS Alarm / Security / Fire and related Agreements. click here: www.alarmcontracts.com *************************** CONCIERGE LAWYER SERVICE PROGRAM FOR THE ALARM INDUSTRY - You can check out the program and sign up here: https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/page/concierge or contact our Program Coordinator Stacy Spector, Esq at 516 747 6700 x 304. *********************** ALARM ARTICLES: You can always read our Articles on our website at ww.kirschenbaumesq.com/page/alarm-articles updated daily ******************** THE ALARM EXCHANGE - the alarm industries leading classified and business exchange - updated daily ************************* Wondering how much your alarm company is worth?
