Ken,
Your April 11 post about fake license suspension notices form the New Jersey Consumer Affairs Division reminds me of the notices that my clients often receive purportedly from the IRS.  They often start out “We hope that this letter finds you well.”  First thing is that the IRS doesn’t care if you are well or not, and their notices rarely do “find you well.”
The IRS, as do most government agencies, doesn’t send emails.  If they did, the number of responses, legitimate and otherwise, would flood their inbox.  They typically send a letter, many times certified, or, in the case of a collections issue, they show up at your office.
Another hint is that these bogus emails typically request payment in I Tunes cards.  This is another dead giveaway.  My office spends a lot of time on hold with the IRS.  If they had I Tunes cards they would most certainly have better music on hold.

Taxing authorities and most governmental agencies communicate by US Post Office mail.  In any event, be  careful to confirm who you actually talking to before discussing personal information or sending money.
If you do have a real audit you should have experienced counsel immediately.  How you handle the inquiry matters.  You will find my advice to be to cooperate [as if you really have a choice], be truthful and be accurate.  Using counsel that your licensing agency may have heard of won't hurt either.
As for tax inquires it's probably best to engage your accountant immediately and if appropriate a tax attorney, especially if the inquiry is likely to uncover troubling information.
