DMPSecurityDealerDigest_Issue11_WEB.pdf Respectfully, Joseph (Joe) Pfefer President & Founder Jade Alarm Co. ************************* Response ************************** There is actually quite a number of resources on the history of the alarm industry and a google search will reveal many of the sources of information. You can get an in depth review by visiting the Alarm Articles on the K&K website. In 2020 we ran a series of 7 articles; you can find them here: https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/article/history-of-the-burglar-and-fire-alarm-industry-part-1-before-there-was-an-industry-november-9-2020 https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/article/history-of-the-burglar-and-fire-alarm-industry-part-2-england-november-10-2020 https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/article/history-of-the-burglar-and-fire-alarm-industry-part-3-united-states-november-11-2020 https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/article/history-of-fire-and-smoke-alarms-part-4-november-14-2020 https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/article/history-of-sprinkler-systems-in-us-part-5-november-16-2020 https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/article/alarm-industry-history-who-was-augustus-russel-pope-part-6-november-18-2020 https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/article/alarm-industry-history-edwin-holmes-father-of-the-modern-burglar-alarm-business-part-7-november-19-2020 This is not the first time Joe has reminded us of his interest in the history of the alarm industry, and hopefully waking your interest in the history of your industry. I was privileged to a tour of the Holmes central station in Manhattan in my first or second year in practice. After a visit to Rapid Response Monitoring I can tell you the industry has come a long way. I don’t think Joe had the opportunity to visit Homes cs, but he may have met or even worked with Tom Edison, which accounts for his kin interest in history. Joe, is this rumor this may start even remotely true? Thanks for bringing this to our attention and I hope we will be around when we marvel how things were done and how they changed well into the future. ************************** Liability issues Regarding Fire Alarm Panels Part 4 ************************** Knowledge is the key: If there is any doubt in my language in my previous articles in this series, then your customers installed fire alarm would tell you there is a problem immediately if not the first year. The first problem is noise of any kind at any level on any wire. What does this mean? There is a grounding differential. You are passing current. A low level of voltage. However, if that voltage is over 2 volts dc or 1 volt AC peak to peak, you will have false alarms. A potential lightning threat that needs to be addressed. Let’s focus on this, why are we having more of these types of problems today, then in the past? Answer: The development of SMT technology used on PC boards today have lowered the pf capacitance of the PC board, not to mention the fact that we are also using switch mode power supplies. The boards are shrinking per every new designed invented by fire alarm manufactures every year for competitiveness. In the earlier years, phone lines were the primary source of grounding differentials causing all kinds of phantom issues including arcing across the substrates on the PC board. The advent of wireless communications has corrected this. The use of fiber optics on all sorts of data loops also is a corrective measure, but fiber optics have traditionally been very expensive. So, noise is the first clue as to the viability & survivability of a fire alarm panel for the first year. Even in these cases with off the shelf surge suppression would never stop the inevitable. Part of my discussion with the dealer in trouble shooting, are you currently using surge suppression on the system? They all naturally have the over-the-counter brand. So, knowledge is the key to success here in diagnosing the inevitable while mitigating the problem. Some say, I have a Crystal ball and others think I walk on water. Truly I say, 37 years of experience dwarfs my degrees.
