Surge Protection

Ken
I fully agree with John Pecore in his 8 part series on Liability issues regarding fire alarms.
He is correct about surge protection saving equipment. I just automatically figure it in cost of panel when I do replacements so customer has no argument; you get it installed like it or not. No surge suppression then go find another contractor. Surge suppression is not one place you want to skimp. I do Forensic Electrical Inspection work for an Insurance provider and see where proper surge protection and unified grounding has saved thousands of dollars in damage.
I have seen 2 cases where whole house surge suppression stopped damage and protected a home and home next to it that did not have surge protection and caught fire from a damaging surge when high tension wires came down in lower power distribution system.
This mind set of “it won't happen to me” or “that's why I have insurance” which often does not cover surge damage needs to end.
