Replacing land lines with VOIP
*************************
Ken,
Something totally missed in dropping a previous land line provider is that new providers are giving VoIP lines for communication. Voice lines are for voice. Data does not work consistently on VoIP lines. Alarms and traditional fax machines don't qualify for VoIP line use.

Response

I didn’t know this was still an issue.  It should not be a surprise that alarms don’t work as reliably [or at all] with VOIP communication pathways.  This was a big problem when cable companies were switching over land lines for VOIP on a mass level.  I don’t hear about it much now.
It’s the customer’s responsibility to provide the communication pathways that you recommend for the alarm system or other systems you install.  It is your responsibility to let your customer know what communication lines are needed or to be avoided; also to offer alternatives, such as cellular and radio.  The K&K Standard Form Agreements makes these responsibilities clear; make sure you don’t do anything to alter these provisions.

Invitation to attend round table at ISC on Thursday Nov 21
**************************

Ken,

We’re excited to invite you and your audience to a special panel discussion at ISC East!

    Session Title:

Public Safety & The Security Industry Working Together – Impacts of TMA-AVS-01 (Alarm Validation Scoring)

     Details:

  • Room: 1A07
  • Date: Thursday, November 21
  • Time: 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM

Session Overview:

In January 2023, the ANSI-accredited Alarm Validation Standard AVS-01 brought significant advancements to monitoring and emergency response. Join us to hear directly from the co-chairs of the committee as they discuss how AVS-01 has impacted police response times and helped reduce false alarms. This session will cover best practices for applying the standard to enhance customer satisfaction and business performance. Additionally, learn how public safety teams have adapted to these changes, making a measurable difference in alarm response.

    Panelists:

  • Joey Rao-Russell, President & CEO, Kimberlite Corporation
  • Bob Finney, Director/911 Coordinator, Collier County Sheriff’s Office
  • Frank Fernandez, PPVAR Vice President; Retired Deputy Chief of Police and Chief of Operations, Miami Police Department
  • Thomas Nakatani, Vice President, Customer Monitoring Technology, ADT

Moderated by:

  • David Morgan, Co-founder, SD Marketing

Professionals across the security industry—including monitoring centers, security dealers, integrators, public safety representatives from law enforcement, fire departments, ECC, and other industry professionals—are strongly encouraged to attend.
