When you get an email or a phone call or anything from anybody all you gotta do is grab their email address and put it into the Internet and see what comes back with 90% of the Internet addresses that they send you. You can tell right away they’re bogus then don’t open it after that.

The ClickFix scam is a reminder that cyber criminals no longer need sophisticated hacking tools when they can simply convince users to do the work for them. As the July 13 2026 article explained, these attacks commonly rely on fake verification screens, browser warnings, or CAPTCHA prompts that instruct users to run commands on their own computers.
For alarm companies, central stations, integrators, and dealers, the lesson is straightforward: no employee should ever follow instructions from a website directing them to open Windows Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, or paste commands into their system. Legitimate websites do not require those actions to verify identity or access content.
Be mindful that IRS, your state and the Courts do not typically communicate by email, and don't ask you to call a number or click on a link. Today I got several emails telling me I had ignored jury duty, warning me I better click the link or call an 800 number. I was suspect because I am exempt from Federal jury duty as an attorney. Next I know I did not receive any notice. Finally I went to the Federal Court's website and saw that it's phone numbers did not match the number given in the email. Usually I would ignore and delete this kind of email, but I decided to confirm.
Technology can help, but training remains the first line of defense. The most successful scams exploit trust, urgency, and curiosity. A few extra seconds spent verifying a request can save days of cleanup, lost productivity, customer concerns, and potential liability. If you've ever had your computer seized it's pretty scary. Lucky for me I'm a United States Bankruptcy Trustee and my IT service got on it immediately and had it cleared in a few minutes; you may not be that lucky.
Thanks to Christopher Edgar, Mike and others who continue sharing these warnings with the industry. The more frequently these threats are discussed, the less likely someone is to become the next victim.
The suggestion of avoiding links altogether whenever possible is excellent practical advice. As attackers become more creative, a healthy level of skepticism should be standard operating procedure. Instead of clicking links in emails or pop-ups, employees should navigate directly to known websites, contact the vendor or institution independently, or consult their IT team.
Cybersecurity is not just an IT issue anymore; it is a business risk management issue. The companies that make cybersecurity awareness part of their culture will be far better positioned than those that treat it as someone else's responsibility.
