Smoke itself doesn’t rise or fall on its own—what actually happens is that hot air rises, and smoke goes along for the ride. That’s why, in most fires, smoke collects at the ceiling first, which is also why smoke detectors are typically installed high up. That being said, he’s absolutely right that in some cases, smoke doesn’t behave the way people expect. If a fire isn’t burning hot enough—like when a flue is closed, an oxygen-starved fire smolders, or a furnace flue fails—the smoke can cool down quickly and lose the lift from the hot air. That’s when it can settle lower in the room instead of rising. That explains why, in his example, the smoke filled the downstairs but didn’t hit the ceiling or set off the detectors. As for burnt toast, even that smoke is still slightly warmer than the surrounding air, so it will rise initially, just not with the same force as smoke from a hotter fire. Same with cigarette smoke—it goes up at first before spreading out. And chimneys rely on this principle, using the heat to create an updraft. So, in most cases, smoke rises because it’s carried by heat, but when that heat isn’t there, it can hang lower even settle. It really comes down to the temperature of the air moving it,rather than Brett ************************ Response ************************ Sounds like a good reason for the protective provisions in the Fire All in One that makes it clear that alarm companies are not insurers, that technology isn’t perfect, that alarm companies cannot be exposed to loss caused by failure of the fire alarm equipment or services. ************************* Webinars: All webinars will be recorded and available on the K&K website at https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/page/alarm-webinars and are available on Podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ken-kirschenbaum-presents/id1794851477 ********************** March 11, 2025 noon ET.
