Liability issues Regarding Fire Alarm Panels –technical perspective Part 1.
***********************
What follows is the first in an 8 part series regarding liabilty issues for fire alarm panels from an alarm expert, John E. Pecore, BSEET, MBA, President of Stormin Protection Products Inc in Lawtey FL

Ken,
I have been stewing on this for about a week after my conversation with a fire alarm dealer in North Carolina that is having trouble with the end-user not interested in surge suppression on the SLC or the NAC circuit since it wasn’t specified by the PE.  The dealer wanted some supporting information from the NEC code, or NFPA that surge suppression is required to be used.
In this case it is a standalone building, and the only thing that can support the fire alarm company is the fact that a type 1, or type 2 surge suppressor is the only thing to be required on the AC electrical panel both primary and secondary panels.  In the case of a fire alarm, they are normally down line on a branch circuit from the secondary electrical panel.  I tried to present an argument on behalf of the dealer, and it was a weak argument in support of them especially as a moral dilemma.
However, the best argument I could come up with is the fire alarm dealer needs to providing a legal document protecting them from lightning damage of any kind, including the health concerns of the occupants (https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/page/alarm-contract).  Thank you for your permission, Ken at Kirschenbaum & Kirshenbaum P.C. Attorneys at Law. They have all kinds of contracts for security companies in every area. You can personally e-mail Ken at kin@kirschenbaumesq.com
This is first of 8 articles I will be submitting; comments are welcome.
