Question:

Jennifer,

My employment agreement is on auto-renew, but I am underpaid, I feel.  How do I initiate renegotiating?

Appreciate your insight.

Thanks,

Dr. I

Answer:

This a great question, and applicable to so many... Best answer - Directly.   Be open about your ask with your supervisor/Chief/Department Head - the applicable person in control of your compensation.   Ask for a face to face meeting to review your compensation, specifically.   Take the time to gather information available to you, whether through reporting available to you, or productivity metrics you can deduce, so you are ready to make a case for your performance.  Be ready with Merit-based reasons justifying an increase.  Perhaps you are exceeding RVU targets, or picking up slack supervising or administratively, of you have been a "team player" related to Call or additional shifts - find your value to highlight.   Be ready to present your case.  Be organized for your scheduled meeting.

Happy to help you prepare.   And, on the next agreement, let's request to build in not less than annual review periods, so you have a natural trigger for assessment and potential reevaluated compensation structures...
