Google investment in ADT
*********************
Several of you brought the ADT – Google news to my attention.  I suppose there are a number of questions, starting with, what now?
Q:        How does Google’s investment in ADT and some deal that combines technology affect you?
A:        My guess is, it doesn’t, but I’d like to hear from dealers how they think this may affect their business.
Q:        Does this investment influence valuation of your alarm business?
A:        The $450,000,000 investment for 6.6% works out to about 19.5 times RMR.  That is not a new standard for the multiple.  I don’t think the industry needs to read anything into that calculation.  You think different, let us know why.

Recording audio in residence

Ken,
I have a customer that wants to include audio recording in her residential CCTV system. What is the legality, if any, on that?

Audio and video laws can be found at https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/page/alarm-law-issues
If anyone sees an update needed, please let me know.
There is a big difference between your liability and your customer’s liability.  If all you do is install the audio device I think you should have no liability.  If your customer uses the audio device in a prohibited and illegal way, then your customer will have exposure for civil and criminal liability.
The Standard Form All in One agreements warn your customers to use all devices legally.
