Comment on Seattle to Require Video or Audio Verification from article on September 23, 2024

Ken
Newsletter 9/23/24… "Seattle to Require Video or Audio Verification", before alarm response.
Also known as VR/Verified Response… This probably is not a surprise to most of the K&K wide audience.  It is the L/E Law Enforcement solution to the unsustainable false alarm problem that has been compromising public safety.  L/E has given alarm industry leadership about two decades to prepare for VR, so why the big surprise with the two week notice.
NMC, what do you have to tell your customers in Seattle?   VR started about 25 years ago in Salt Lake City; LA about 20 years: Fontana and Sandy Springs GA examples of time and court tested, about 15 years; and dozens more major cities & minor communities to date. Now 2024, VR has become a fast moving trend across the US and Canada, by policy and ordinance. Several million existing monitored subscribers are applauding too, because the courts are finally reversing responsibility for false alarm fines/fees.  Dozens of alarm dealers/ integrators and millions of their existing (and new) subscribers, already absorbed new technologies and responsibilities that have met VR Standards, retaining their $RMR market value.

No response tells the criminals not to worry, the cops won't show up and even if you do get caught, we don't have capital punishment, so you will be fine.

The “surprise” isn’t that video or audio will be required for police response, it’s the 2 week short notice, which certainly will not give the industry or customer’s time to upgrade the systems.  It’s an unrealistic time frame and likely to put a lot of customers at risk.
I can’t reconcile what I believe to be government’s exclusive responsibility to provide police and fire protection with the regulations, hurtles, fines and insistence that the industry and customers install various electronic surveillance technology which assists the PD and FD in fulfilling their exclusive government duties.  Maybe the PD and FD should outlaw use of electronic surveillance systems …. That surely will cut down on false alarms; that surely will help reduce PD and FD budgets….   Don’t get me started, because there’s a whole lot of cutting that can and should be done before the cost of false alarms is calculated as the big bad bear.
And Dusan, you might have missed that this is Seattle.
No jail time, period.  At least that’s my perception.
