comment on fire protection for children and hearing impaired from April 1, 2017 article

Ken
Regarding children (and hearing impaired adults) sleeping thru fire alarms, this problem has been recognized by NFPA and in 2014 a change was made to the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code (NFPA-72) requiring low frequency (520Hz) sounders in "sleeping areas" of certain occupancies (specifically R-1 which includes hotel, motel, and any place with transient tenants).  There have been studies that show that the higher frequencies (3000 Hz +-) used traditionally in fire alarm horns do not wake children and hearing impaired adults as well as the low frequency devices.   So if designing a hotel system, this needs to be included in the design approach. Several manufacturers offer the sounders and sounder-strobes, although I am not aware of a multiple-station smoke alarm with a 520Hz sounder included.  Also note that the low frequency devices use much more power, so include additional power supply capability in your design.

With regard to nfpa requirements and waking sleeping children, code requirements have changed.
520 Hz square wave low frequency sounders have been shown more effective in waking hearing impaired and children.  New hotels were requured to comply after 2014.  Sound pressure at the pillow in public mode should be at least 75db in a multiple sounder application.

Which contract for audio?
*************************
Ken
I currently have the All in One Commercial security agreement from a few years ago. Late 2014. I have a customer wanting me to install a Louroe Electronics audio recording device. They make a microphone that connects to a base station which allows you to record the audio on a specific camera feed only.  All I need to know is if the all in one commercial agreement includes audio recording?

The Commercial All in One covers all security equipment, systems and services.  If your audio recording device is intended for security then the Commercial All in One is the appropriate agreement.  You will describe the system in the Schedule of Equipment and Services.
But that's all you need to know.  Your contract is outdated and you need to update it.
