COMMENTS ON NON-COMPLIANT FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS FROM JULY 9, 2015 ARTICLE
*************************
Ken
This is a response to Jake Voll's comments [July 9 2015] using the device containing a microphone to listen to the sounders of the smoke detector-- I say NO WAY VERY BAD IDEA as an installing company. What is not fully disclosed is that the device cannot distinguish between a low battery chirp and the detector sounder and when (and not IF) the low battery sounds from the hardwired detector, it will set off the device triggering a "fire" signal.  The Fire Department will respond and of course it will be when one is on vacation or not home.  The Fire department will find no answer and potentially break down the door. Is that a real good alternative to utilizing a device which is a workaround to providing the proper device to do the job?  It sounds like a way to appease the customer and provide a sense of security that they have monitored smoke detectors.  I will never use this type of device and would either install a system integrated wireless detector or just stay away from the subject if the homeowner does not want us to do the job properly.

COMMENT ON SUBSCRIBER WANTING TO CUT CORNERS FROM JULY 14, 2015

Mr. Yusza said it best when he commented that the industry provides detection not protection. With that in mind, you can install an extensive detection system, but no amount of sensors will protect a homeowner from being shot through his glass window. Can any of you sleep at night without installing ballistic glass? With the majority of break ins occurring during the day and through the front or back door, a homeowner without the budget for a full perimeter system is well served by an inexpensive, basic install. By all means, sell full perimeter when you can, but passing on a deal because the homeowner wants something less is unnecessary. Just make sure you have the industry's best Standard Form Agreements to fall back on if the stuff hits the fan.

From your email on 7/14/15, would the comment made to the customer "We actually want to do everything possible to save your life and I can't do that for $99",  get you into more trouble if something goes wrong and customer gets hurt?

RESPONSE

I am reminding of the lawsuit I had with the subscriber who claimed he told the alarm company he wanted the best alarm system there was, and he wanted it installed for free and monitored cheap.  Well he suffered a loss and only remembered that he wanted the best alarm available.  Cover your butt with a proper contract and use the Disclaimer Notice.  I created the Disclaimer Notice because of this case.
