Question:

Jennifer,

A colleague let me know that it was not appropriate for me to name a patient's name unless we share a formal referral and common treatment bond. Is this true?

Thanks

Dr. C

Answer:

Yep, that's correct.  HIPAA protects all individually identifiable patient information, and name falls right at the top of that category. Be advised the list of authorized disclosures above is not exhaustive.
