Camera placement is a recurring theme in this forum; where you can and where you can't install cameras.  And, what happens if you do install in the wrong place or if your subscriber does the installation himself or moves the cameras you installed?
We pretty much know where cameras don't belong: bathrooms, dressing rooms, bedrooms and areas where privacy is expected.  We also know that occasionally a subscriber will request a camera in a questionable place, or an area typically prohibited, and offer a rational explanation why its necessary and an exceptional circumstance.
A East Hampton, Long Island, NY home owner rented out his house as a summer vacation home and had installed 7 cameras placed in bedrooms, bathrooms and hallways.  Cameras were remote viewable and data recorded for later viewing as well as live video streaming.  The system was in placed for Tenants were unaware of the cameras.  This went on for many years and different tenants were affected.  The homeowner was finally arrested in June 2013 and charged with unlawful surveillance and endangering the welfare of a child.  Ultimately he pleaded guilty to 14 counts of second degree unlawful surveillance and 9 counts of endangering the welfare of a child.  The prosecutor asked for 2 to 8 years in jail.  The sentence however was 5 years probation.
No alarm company is mentioned in the article.  The article also reports that several civil suits have been brought against the homeowner.  In view of the conviction liability will be established and all that will need to be proved are damages.
If and when you install cameras, especially if you have any inkling that the end user may move them, be sure to document the placement in your contract.  Obviously do not install cameras or listening devices in improper places.  You don't want a follow up article mentioning you, and that would be the least of your problems.
