Comment on adding electrical service to contract and your services from article on February 21, 2020

Ken
The alarm company looking to add electrical work to their contract and services should check with and notify their insurance carrier.  Not all insurance companies offering alarm industry coverage may offer to cover electrical.
Security America does cover electrical work but the alarm side of the business has to be predominating and the price schedule may change proportionately.
Workmans Comp is also a consideration as line voltage rates are different than low voltage.
Anon was right to ask before leaping.

Watch that prevailing wage issue too.  Electrician will have different category than the low voltage technician.
Be careful about your insurance coverage.  Use a broker on The Alarm Exchange and make sure your coverage is alarm industry E&O, that you can add additional insureds without expense, that your coverage is sufficient, that you have contractual indemnity coverage and if possible, that you can select defense counsel.
See the Roundtable with Bart Didden [see below] and check if we still have openings.  If not, give Bart a call; he is always helpful.

Adding repair service, not maintenance

Ken
What if a customer that didn't sign-up with maintenance wants to add it?   What do you recommend?
Thank You,
Ryan

Your customer has signed the All in One Agreement and did not select an option under the Repair Service provision.  When the contract was signed you should have been able to get the customer to sign the Per Call option, at the very least.
But what now?  You can have customer sign a new All in One where the installation part will simply say that the system is already installed, and then select the Repair Service option you want, or you can have the customer sign by the Repair Service option on the existing agreement after modifying the All in One to add the Repair Service.
Let me remind you that we don’t use the word “maintenance” in the alarm industry unless you are really doing maintenance.  Be mindful that Repair Service is not maintenance; Inspection service is not maintenance.
For all you fire guys, I know NFPA does use the word maintenance. [at least they use to].  Good for them.  Don’t use it.  The Fire All in One includes monitoring, inspection and repair service, but no maintenance.
