Question:

Jennifer,

When I get a record request from a patient may I charge for the copies my office makes?

Dr. S

Answer:

Absolutely.  You may charge for copies, but not more than 75 cents per page.  While there is no express time frame for you to respond to such a request, or guidance whether to request for payment before or after you turn over the records, it is standard course to be prompt with any response and to request payment prior to delivering the records after such a request.

Failure to respond to such a request is a matter dealt with by the Office of Professional Medical Conduct, should such a scenario be brought to the Department of Health's attention by complaint from the patient or otherwise.
