CA license and insurance requirement
**************************
Not all state alarm license laws require any particular insurance.  So it is interesting that California has enacted an insurance requirement.  What's interesting is that it seems to apply only to Limited Liability Companies [LLC].
If the ACO [alarm company operator] is an LLC the LLC must maintain a general liability policy with limits of one million dollars.  If the LLC has more than 5 managing members the minimum insurance increases by $100,000 for each additional member, up to a maximum of 5 million dollars.  This is somewhat ambiguous because once you have 5 managing members it looks like it's $100,000 for each "member".  [it doesn't say managing members].
Here's another issue you should be aware of.  The insurance policy cannot name any other party as an insured, so you can't add an additional insured.  If you're a dealer and you have to indemnify your central station you won't be able to name the central station as an additional insured.  The policy does have to name the Bureau of Security & Investigative Services.
Do business as a corporation and elect subchapter S when applying for your federal tax id.  That solves the insurance issue.  There is no insurance requirement for a corporation or doing business as a partnership [not advisable] or conducting business in your own name [definitely not advisable].
