I agree with the essence of what Gene wrote. Sperry West is one of very, very, few companies that actually makes covert cameras. Yes, we must use some Asian components, as that is pretty much all that is available. A lot of our products use circuit boards originating in S. Korea and Taiwan, but right now, the only way we could eliminate Chinese circuit boards, is to also eliminate many cameras from our line. Unfortunately, the world market, not only the US, but elsewhere, dictates where some products are made in sufficient quantity to competitively meet demands, or desires. The United States has a long history of inventing and engineering products and letting other countries take over what should have been our market. In our industry, closed circuit TV cameras were made by RCA, GE, Motorola, Dage, Philco, Cohu (not the similarly named Japanese company) and others. In the 1980’s I contracted with GE to Private label cameras for my company and they were very good quality cameras and reasonable. Then GE decided the cameras at that time were too low a volume product, and discontinued making them. Cohu, in San Diego held out for a long time, but found it necessary to buy cameras and components from Sony. Sony, known as a fine quality manufacturer, found it too expensive to make many products in Japan and contracted a lot of manufacturing to South Korea. Did you ever notice where most every known brand of consumer TV’s comes from? Regardless of the brand, most are from China. Samsung may be the exception as they are a Korean company. Are you old enough to remember TV’s from Zenith, RCA, Dumont, Philco, GE & Magnavox? Or tape decks for Ampex? Do you remember when HI Fi brands like Mcintosh, Marantz, HH Scott, Fisher and others ruled the audio world? What happened? Japan happened, and when Japanese products became cheaper to make in Korea, then in China, we lost that industry, except for a few very high end manufactures of low volume. So, we have had this occurring in everything we make from clothing to cars. Did you know that we once had a huge garment industry centered in Manhattan, where factories actually made dresses, suits etc. It is a major problem and it has been going on for way too long. Consumer products drive the market. When most American and other consumers shop, do they even try to find out where a product comes from? No, if they want it and they like the price, they buy it. The world’s largest company is American, they design and engineer great products, then have most of them made in China (Apple). You and I are not going to solve this problem today, and I agree that it is a major problem. Barry Sperry West *********************** Response *********************** I remember and I agree.
