********************* Is there camera shortage from article on April 8, 2020 ********************* Ken, I’m responding to this question: “Is anyone having problem getting cameras or other products from China? How is disruption in product affecting your operation?” Overall, camera supply from China is mixed. Some companies are certainly suffering from shortages but others are not. One theme is that the bigger manufacturers generally had more inventory on commonly used products so that is helping keep supply in those cases. However, the one area indisputably with massive shortages are elevated temperature thermal cameras, aka "coronavirus cameras". This is the top-selling video surveillance item, by far. It also presents legal risk as most of these cameras are not FDA approved and sellers are trying to get around it by saying they are not medical devices though they are being used to screen people for fevers / coronavirus symptoms. They perhaps should consult an attorney like your firm. John Honovich ******************** Response ******************** I suppose like all security equipment there are limitations in technology. Obviously no one should be claiming to have the answer to detection of the virus through a camera, at least until that technology is available. Also, alarm companies should not be selling medical grade equipment, or equipment that’s not medical grade advertised as being more effective or having AHJ approval. Misrepresentation and fraud is definitely not recommended practice. ********************** Are employee home computers secure ********************** Ken Many of our employees are working from home and accessing our office computers. We are concerned with hacking. An attempt was made with one employee. We are also updating our subscribers’ contracts. Is there anything dealing with cyber security? What should we be doing about securing our home bound employees with cyber security? Jeff ********************** Response ********************** I believe our 2019 contract [and of course the 2020 updates] includes an RMR line item for cyber security. Most alarm companies would have to subcontract that work out to a cyber security company. There are several around. Home computers are likely less secure than your office computer, where you may have taken some cyber security precautions. Getting hacked will certainly wake you up to the importance of cyber security. There are companies, such as PC Matic, that are relatively inexpensive [especially considering the alternative] and you may want to secure your employee’s home computers with that kind of protection. If you figure it out, let us know. In the meantime, the Standard Form Agreements all insulate you from liability for your subscriber’s cyber attack if related to the alarm system. *********************** Reaching K&K during the lockdown ********************** During this crisis the most efficient way to reach our attorneys is via email.
