A resource insurance-buyers should be aware of is an independent financial rating service focused on the insurance industry, AM Best. AM Best’s ratings confirm a carrier’s financial liquidity and size ratings so a buyer can get a feel for the financial stability of any insurer they’re thinking of working with. To access this free resource, individuals can go to www.ambest.com, sign up for a free account, and then search for insurer ratings by name anytime they like. For a longer-view perspective, once you’ve pulled up the ratings of the insurer you’re looking for, scroll down the page to see how their ratings have changed over the years to see how they’re trending. We recommend this site to our customers: it’s easy to access and helpful when making decisions. Nothing beats having a disinterested 3rd party confirm your insurer has money in the bank. Crystal does bring up a majority of the positive side of working with Non-Admitted carriers, however there still are some negative aspects that the readers should be aware of as well: 1) Non-Renewal - Non-Admitted carriers don’t need to send out notification or meet the state guidelines for non-renewal notices 2) Premium Increases – Non-Admitted carriers don’t need to send out notification for premium increases. For example, if admitted carrier in IL wants to increase premium more than 30% for whatever reason, they need to send out notice via mail meeting proper time requirements. 3) Coverage Changes – Admitted carriers must mail out changes to their insureds if they are making coverage changes prior to renewal, non-admitted carriers have the ability to add different exclusions or change coverages on the insured at each renewal. We write with both admitted and non-admitted carriers depending on each client or different exposure, good to know both sides though.
